The Festa de Sant Medir is a traditional celebration that takes place in Barcelona, especially in the Gràcia neighborhood, although it is also celebrated in other places in Catalonia. This festivity, which occurs on March 3rd, is dedicated to Sant Medir, the patron saint of confectioners, and has its roots in an ancient religious tradition.
During the Festa de Sant Medir, the Gràcia neighborhood fills with color, music, and joy as residents and visitors take part in various events and activities organized for the occasion. One of the most distinctive features of this festival is the colorful and lively floats that parade through the streets accompanied by music and confetti.
The main tradition of the Festa de Sant Medir is the "tirada de caramelos," where participants throw candies from the floats to the crowds gathered in the streets. Candies are the most representative symbol of the festivity and are generously distributed among attendees, especially among the younger ones, who enjoy collecting the sweets raining down from above.
In addition to the candy throwing, the Festa de Sant Medir includes other events and activities such as live music concerts, traditional dances, casteller performances (human towers), fireworks displays, and gastronomic fairs featuring a wide variety of local products.
The Festa de Sant Medir is a celebration deeply rooted in Catalan culture and represents an opportunity to come together with the community, celebrate local traditions, and enjoy a festive and fun atmosphere. It is a chance to disconnect from daily routine, share moments of joy with friends and family, and welcome the arrival of spring in a unique and colorful way.
